RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC)

The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is a worldwide accepted operator's certificate. For UK it is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment. In the Netherlands it is equivalent to Dutch Marcom B for yachts. With the certificate you can operate both fixed and handheld equipment with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It is obtained by successfully completing an SRC exam conducted at our training centre.

Most candidates are required to complete an RYA SRC course prior to taking the exam, therefore the majority of exams take place after marine radio SRC courses.

After booking a SRC course you receive a book and log-in details. This SRC course is an online course. There is no age limit for taking the SRC course, although exam candidates must be 16 years old on the day of the exam.

Course subjects include:

• Routine operation of marine VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
• The correct VHF channels (frequencies) to be used for each type of communication
• Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
• Ship to shore communication
• Practical use of Marine VHF DSC radios
• Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
• Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
• Search and Rescue Transponders (SART)

The exam

After completing the online course, you can contact us for planning the exam. Please note that the exam fee must be paid to the RYA prior to the exam. The fee is £ 60 (2022). You can pay via the online RYA exam payment service: https://www.rya.org.uk/exams

The exam is a combination of a written theory test and practical assessment in the use of Marine VHF DSC radios. Candidates must be 16 years or older on the day of the exam.

Before the start of the exam you must provide:

1. A passport size photo: 45 mm high by 35 mm wide in colour with your name on the back.
2. A signed copy of the Exam Application Form, received after online payment
3. SRC Course Completion Certificate with the unique certification code
