Offshore Personal Survival Course

Offshore Personal Survival Course

The RYA/World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival course is a requirement for those participating in offshore yacht racing. And also a very valuable traning for every cruiser, whether sail or power.

This course has a full program and covers 2 days with a mix of theory and practical skills. One of the most valuable components is a 2 hour pool session in and around a liferaft.

In the World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival Training we cover the full syllabus of the following courses:

  • RYA/MCA Small Craft Basic Sea Survival course
  • RYA/World Sailing Seamanship and Heavy Weather course

The RYA Basic Sea Survival course is designed for those sailing offshore as both recreational and professional sailors. It is one of the pre-requisites when applying for commercial endorsement.

A frequently asked question is whether an STCW sea survival training is a permitted alternative. Ultimately what is acceptable is up to the race organizer however World Sailing standard advice is NOT to accept STCW courses. The reason for this is that the STCW course is a commercial ship qualification and therefore does not contain sailing related items and recreational safety equipment.
